Why your business is not showing on Google Maps
You set up the profile, you did the verification, you searched for your business name — and Google Maps has no idea you exist. There are six documented reasons this happens, and most of them are fixable in under an hour.
1. The profile is not verified
Google will not show a Business Profile publicly until it has been verified. The profile exists in the system and you can see it, but it is invisible to anyone searching Maps until verification completes. To check: open Business Profile Manager, click through to the business and look for a blue verified badge. If it says 'Get verified' or shows a postcard or video verification pending, that is the whole explanation — nothing else needs to be fixed.
2. The profile is too new
Even a freshly verified profile takes time to appear consistently in search results. Google's indexing processes run on their own schedule, and a newly verified profile can take two to four weeks to surface reliably in Maps. There is no way to rush this. The useful action during that window is to fill the profile in completely — categories, services, opening hours, photos — so it ranks well from the day it becomes visible.
3. The address is hidden because it is a service-area business
Plumbers, electricians, consultants and other businesses that visit customers at their premises often set their profile to hide their address. This is the correct setting. The side effect is that no pin appears on Google Maps, which many owners mistake for not appearing at all. The business still surfaces in area and near-me searches — just without the pin. If a knowledge panel appears when you search your business name but no pin shows on the map, this is the reason. If the panel does not appear at all, the issue is something else on this list.
4. The profile has been suspended
Google suspends profiles that appear to violate its guidelines. Common triggers include adding a city name or keyword to the business name field (writing 'Cape Town Plumbing Solutions' instead of the actual registered trading name), selecting a category that does not match what the business actually does, or creating duplicate listings for the same location. To check: open Business Profile Manager and look for a suspension notice. If one is present, click through to the appeal process. Suspension appeals typically resolve within one to two weeks once the violation is corrected and documented.
5. The primary category does not match the search
Google decides which searches your profile is relevant to based primarily on the primary category. A business listed as 'Home Services' does not surface for 'plumber'; one listed as 'Marketing Consultant' does not surface for 'digital marketing agency Cape Town'. Search for the term you want to rank for, check what primary category the top three map pack results are using, and change yours to match the most specific option available. Secondary categories help, but the primary is the dominant signal.
6. The profile exists, but it is being outranked
The map pack shows three businesses. If your competitors have a higher review count, more recent photos, a more complete profile and an owner who responds to every review, your profile exists — it is ranked fourth or lower. Google ranks Business Profiles on three criteria: relevance to the search, proximity to the searcher, and prominence. Prominence is driven by review volume and recency, profile completeness and activity, and how quickly the owner responds. This is the reason that takes months rather than an afternoon to fix.
What each issue takes to fix
| Issue | Fix | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Not verified | Complete the verification step in Business Profile Manager | 1 day to 2 weeks |
| Too new | Wait and complete the profile while it propagates | 2–4 weeks |
| No pin (service area) | No fix needed — the profile is working correctly | — |
| Suspended | Correct the guideline violation and submit an appeal | 1–2 weeks |
| Wrong category | Change primary category to match what target customers search | Same day |
| Being outranked | Review generation, photo updates, regular profile activity | 1–3 months |
Five of the six issues are fixable in an afternoon. The sixth — building enough prominence to outrank established competitors — is the one that takes sustained work. If you would rather hand that over, we run Local SEO from R3 500 per month. A once-off profile setup — verification, category selection, service descriptions, first photo batch and name-address-phone consistency across the South African directories that carry weight — is R2 500. The full optimisation checklist is in our Google Business Profile guide for South African businesses.
