What a website actually costs in South Africa

Ask this question in a Facebook group and you will get forty answers between R500 and R80 000, all delivered with total confidence. So here are the actual published figures, with sources, and then an explanation of why the spread is so wide.

The averages

The most useful dataset available is a survey of 56 South African web design companies' published prices, compiled by SME Rocket. It found:

WhatAverageRange
One-page siteR3 765
Five-page siteR6 634R399 – R56 350
E-commerce storeR8 445
Monthly website plansR400p/mR150 – R4 000p/m
Hourly rate~R500p/hR300 – R1 000p/h
HostingR107p/m

Procompare, which collects quote data rather than published prices, reports figures in the same neighbourhood at the low end and much higher at the top: a simple CMS site averaging around R5 000, custom builds between R38 000 and R88 000, and e-commerce averaging roughly R19 000. The difference between the two datasets is instructive — published prices skew low because published prices are marketing, while quoted prices skew high because quotes are negotiations.

It costs materially more in Cape Town

The same survey broke the five-page average down by city, and the gap is larger than most people assume:

CityAverage five-page site
Cape TownR11 561
JohannesburgR7 607
National averageR6 634

Cape Town runs about 52% above Johannesburg for the same deliverable. That is not a craft premium. It is studio overhead, a design-heavy client base that has been trained to expect it, and the plain fact that in Cape Town more agencies compete on portfolio than on price.

Why the range runs from R399 to R56 350

Because "a website" describes at least four different products:

  • R400 – R1 500: a template with your logo dropped in. No copywriting, no tracking, no speed work, frequently no ownership of the domain. Some are hosted on platforms you cannot leave.
  • R3 000 – R9 000: a properly built site with copy written for your offer, working analytics and a real conversion path. This is where most small businesses should be.
  • R15 000 – R30 000: multi-page or e-commerce with integrations, or the same one-pager bought through an agency carrying account-management overhead.
  • R38 000 – R88 000+: genuinely custom builds, complex logic, larger teams. Real work, but almost never what a salon or a plumbing business needs.

The costs that get left out of the quote

The build price is rarely the whole number. Budget for:

  • VAT at 15%. SA convention is to quote excluding VAT, and plenty of quotes do not say so. Always ask.
  • Domain: roughly R100 – R200 a year for a .co.za.
  • Hosting: R107p/m on average, though a static site can run free on Cloudflare Pages.
  • Maintenance: R150 – R4 000p/m depending on what is actually being done. Much of the market charges a retainer for nothing but hosting.
  • Content: photography and copywriting, if they are not included. Frequently they are not.

What price does not tell you

Two questions predict outcomes far better than the fee does. First: who owns the domain, the hosting and the ad accounts? If the answer is not unambiguously you, the price is irrelevant because you are renting. Second: is there any conversion path at all — a reason for a visitor to make contact and a route for that contact to reach you within minutes? A R25 000 site with no conversion path is worse value than a R4 900 site that has one.

For reference, what we charge

One page R4 900 once-off, multi-page from R8 900, e-commerce from R14 900, all excluding VAT, all live in five working days. Those numbers are published on the pricing page because withholding them wastes both parties' time — and because not one of the five largest agencies in this country publishes a rand figure anywhere on their website.
