Why a R999 website costs more

There is a real market at the bottom of SA web design: R499, R999, R1 399, R299 a month. It exists because it sells, and this is not an argument that those operators are dishonest. It is an argument about what you end up paying in total.

What R999 buys

A template with your logo and your text placed into it. That is a real service and for some businesses — one that needs a business card on the internet and nothing more — it is genuinely enough. Be clear that this is what you are buying.

What it does not buy

  • Copywriting. You write it, which means the most important part of the site is done by someone who has never written a sales page.
  • Conversion tracking. No pixel, no defined conversion event. You will never know if it produced anything.
  • Speed work. Uncompressed images and a page builder loading 300KB of JavaScript, on a market that is overwhelmingly mobile.
  • Ownership, sometimes. A number of the monthly plans host on a platform you cannot export from. Stop paying and the site disappears.
  • A conversion path. A contact form to an inbox is not a conversion path.

The arithmetic

R999 for the build. Twelve months at R299 a month is R3 588, so R4 587 in year one — already the price of a properly built one-pager. Then the site produces nothing, so you rebuild: another R4 900, plus the domain migration if it was not in your name, plus twelve months you spent believing that online marketing does not work for your trade.

The genuine cost is not the R999. It is the year.

When cheap is the right call

If you need a presence so that people who already know your name can find your number, buy the cheap one and spend nothing more. It is the correct decision and anyone telling you otherwise is selling.

If you intend to send paid traffic to it, do not. Traffic to a page with no offer, no copy and no tracking converts the ad budget into nothing, and the ad budget will exceed the build cost within the first month.

The middle is where the value is

The national average for a five-page site is around R6 634. Somewhere between R4 000 and R9 000 you get written copy, a real conversion path, working tracking and a build that is fast on a mid-range phone. That band is where the money makes sense for most South African small businesses — above it you are buying overhead, below it you are buying a placeholder.
